Sediment gravity flow frequency offshore central California diminished significantly following the Last Glacial Maximum

چکیده
A high-resolution multibeam survey from a portion of the San Simeon Channel (offshore Morro Bay, California) captured zone recurring troughs and ridges adjacent to prominent submarine meander bends. Through an integrated study using surveying data, sediment core analysis, radiocarbon dating, stable isotope measurements, we hypothesize that turbidity current event frequency was higher during late Pleistocene than at present conditions. We speculate rise in sea-level following Last Glacial Maximum sequestered sedimentation largely shelf Holocene. This work suggests occurrence gravity flows this region, particularly away any channels, is appreciably lower times continental subaerial exposure.

The Last Glacial Maximum.
We used 5704 14C, 10Be, and 3He ages that span the interval from 10,000 to 50,000 years ago (10 to 50 ka) to constrain the timing of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in terms of global ice-sheet and mountain-glacier extent. Growth of the ice sheets to their maximum positions occurred between 33.0 and 26.5 ka in response to climate forcing from decreases in northern summer insolation, tropical Pac...

[1] We present a new approach to estimate the magnitude of global-mean cooling (dTLGM) at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) relative to the pre-industrial climate, by combining an ensemble of coupled climate model simulations with empirical constraints on regional cooling inferred from proxy data. We have generated a large ensemble of paired runs ( 100) for pre-industrial and LGMboundary condition...

Multiple paleoceanographic proxies in a zonal transect across the California Current near 42øN record modern and last glacial maximum (LGM) thermal and nutrient gradients. The offshore thermal gradient, derived from foraminiferal slx•ies assemblages and oxygen isotope data, was similar at the LGM to that at present (warmer offshore), but average temperatures were 3.3 ø +1.5øC colder. Observed g...
متن کاملReconstructing Last Glacial Maximum bottom water salinities from deep-sea sediment pore £uid pro¢les
Deep-sea sediment pore fluids contain a record of past glaciations in their [Cl] and N18O. The signal of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) ice volume increase remains in the pore fluids as a local peak in each of these species. Using a one-dimensional model to account for the diffusive and advective transport within the sediment column since the LGM, the past bottom water salinity and NOseawater v...
